Protect Voting Rights with Ohio Democrats!
Volunteers across Ohio are protecting the right to vote and access to free and fair elections in a myriad of ways! Join them by serving in one of the various volunteer roles described below.
Poll workers are paid precinct election officials (PEOs) who manage polling locations, operate voting machines and verify voters’ active registration during early voting periods and on Election Day. Hired and trained by county Board of Elections offices, poll workers are the gatekeepers to democracy. Without poll workers, polling locations cannot open on Election day.
Traditionally, Ohio utilizes over 35,000 poll workers on Election Day alone. However, more than 50% of these workers are over the age of 62, contributing to an alarming shortage in the midst of an ongoing pandemic that is disproportionately impacting elders and communities of color.
This year, attorney poll workers are eligible to receive 4 Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credits for their services. All poll workers must be at least 17 years old and a senior in high school or 18 years old and registered to vote.
Trained by staff in election law and voting regulations, poll observers monitor the indoor and outdoor conditions of polling locations in order to prevent and report voter suppression of any kind. Poll observers must receive credentials from ODP, but may travel from out of state.
Voter Protection Hotline
The voter protection hotline allows for ODP staff and volunteers to answer voters’ questions and concerns and document voting rights incidents in our online database during the early vote period and on election day. After completing our hotline training, volunteers will understand the basics of election law, how to utilize relevant software and computer apps and the best way to escalate issues that require immediate attention from our on-staff and volunteer attorneys. This year, to ensure the health and safety of staff and volunteers, all shifts may be completed remotely.
Help Us Recruit
Each week, our team facilitates Phonebanks during which we contact local Democrats, remind them to vote and encourage them to step up to the plate and serve in one of the various volunteer roles described above. To reach them all, we need all the help we can get from enthusiastic and committed volunteers like you!
